Entering some new energy vehicles into the South African market, Toyota SA has somewhat gone on the hybrid offensive. Included in the list of models is the Corolla Hatch, an updated 12th-generation Corolla sedan and RAV4 PHEV.
The former was introduced first in 2019 and ushered in Toyota’s striking new design language and introduced the TNGA platform to the Corolla family which is also shared by its sedan counterpart which arrived a year later. Both models will feature two upgraded powertrains in the lineup. The first being a 1,8-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain which has had a 14% improvement in power with a total output of 103 kW while the 2,0-litre Dynamic Force petrol powerplant is rated at 126 kW and 203 N.m. More importantly, the hatchback achieves a claimed 3,5L/100km with the standard powertrain offering an equally impressive 6L/100 km.
Serving on the SUV front is the RAV 4 Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) which will supplement the growing range of new energy vehicles (NEV) for the model lineup. First bursting onto the scene in 2021 as the RAV4 GX Hybrid and then the Hybrid E-Four earlier on in the year, the latest model isn’t on sale yet but will serve as a market research exercise for Toyota South Africa.

This also represents phase 2 of TSAM’s NEV roll-out plan, following on from the hybrid vehicle expansion strategy across Toyota’s mainstream product ranges.
Powering the wheels of the RAV4 PHEV is a 2,5-litre petrol motor paired to a large EV battery and two electric motors which drive all wheels and both axles. The PHEV system leverages on Toyota’s 4th Generation Hybrid System and is equipped with a high-output dual oil-cooling system that is used in combination with air and water cooling. It transmits the driving force directly to all four wheels and delivers a class-leading combination of power and efficiency.
The battery is of the Lithium-Ion variety which supplies 18.1 kW of power and is located below the passenger compartment. The petrol engine is good for 136 kW and 227 N.m while all combined electrical assistance contributes 134 kW and 40 kW, respectively.
