Thanks to one of our readers Anton we can share with you today rare data about South Africa. New vehicle sales in the country are up 6.6% year-on-year in November to 41,588 units. Passenger cars are up 9.4% to 27,828 units, boosted by strong rental demand (15.6% of the market). Light commercials are down -0.8% to 11,156. In the manufacturers ranking, Toyota cements its domination with 28.6% of the market with the VW Group in 2nd place at a weak 13.2% share. Suzuki impresses at #3 with 7.4% share, distancing Hyundai at 6.9% and Nissan at 5.6%. Ford is relegated to a poor 6th place with 5.4% share vs. #3 and 9.3% over the Full Year 2020. Isuzu, Renault and Kia follow, while Haval brilliantly rounds out the Top 10 with a strong 4.2% share.
Model-wise, this month Toyota monopolises the podium with the Hilux, Hiace and Corolla Cross landing at #3 for its first month of sales in the country. The Isuzu D-Max is solid in 4th place overall while the VW Polo Vivo rounds out the Top 5 at a weak 3.9% share vs. 5.2% over the FY2020. The Toyota Starlet aka Glanza, a rebadged Suzuki Baleno, ends the month in 6th place ahead of the VW Polo, Ford Ranger and Suzuki S-Presso. Another recent launch by the Japanese manufacturer, the Toyota Agya rounds out the Top 10. Notice also the Renault Triber at #15, the Toyota Urban Cruiser (based on the Indian Suzuki Vitara Brezza) at #17, the Great Wall P-Series at #19, the Haval Jolion at #27, Kia Sonet at #29 and Toyota Rumion, a rebadged Suzuki Ertiga, at #30. In the past year, Toyota has accelerated its sourcing in India for the South African market.
