The Japanese giant is forced to cut global production.
Toyota has announced that it will have to issue further restrictions on production for February due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage. Models affected include the Toyota C-HR, GR Yaris, Corolla, and more. Due to this, the brand's production plan for February is expected to come in at 700,000 units.
Toyota notes that demand for its cars is very strong which is why it was aiming for a high production plan during the shortest month of the year. Because of the impact caused by the weak supply chain, it has been forced to adjust this plan by 150,000 units. We can expect the full-year production forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022, to be lower than the previous forecast of nine million units.
Toyota says that it will continue to examine the semiconductor shortage situation and consult with all companies involved with its production. Through this process, consideration will be made regarding the use of substitute parts where possible in anticipation of further constraints. It will also maintain work with its suppliers to strengthen the chain and continue efforts to deliver vehicles to customers as soon as it can.
Toyota concludes its announcement by apologizing to both the customers and suppliers for the plethora of inconveniences and adjustments. The planned suspensions will take place across Japan and run from February 1-19 with the GR Yaris and recently revealed Noah and Voxy vans being affected the worst.
As an additional blow, Toyota also announced that two of its worksites were subject to Covid-19 infection exposures. The Tsutsumi Plant in Toyota City noted that 14 line workers tested positive which led to the factory suspending operations on the production line for the first shift from January 19 to 22.
This isn't the first time that Toyota has had to halt production for the same issue. Last May, the brand was forced to cut production of the Toyota RAV4 and Lexus RX at the company's manufacturing plant in Ontario, Canada. This was due to an outbreak consisting of eight employees at one of the brand's biggest suppliers, Toyotetsu.
