Playa Majagual and Mathilda
Playa Majagual is not too far away if you are looking for a little pristine, hidden, off-the-beaten-path bliss. Majagual is one of the best-kept secrets in the area, located only 18 minutes from San Juan del Sur. Majagual is a world-class beach with a 656-foot (200-meter) bay, beautiful quiet surf, and crystal-clear sand. On the beach, there are usually no more than 10 people at any given moment. It is a complete detachment from the outside world and total immersion in nature.
Mathilda is a combined package with Majagual, with only one small ranchito to eat at that serves basic yet adequate meals. The two beaches are separated by a rock formation, and the entrances to both sites are only a block apart. Mathilda has clear sand as well, but it is noted for its fierce surf, unlike Majagual. Right in front of Mathilda sits Matilda, a low-key hostel. At night, expect to be swarmed by crabs, and if you’re lucky, a turtle may appear. Balcones de Majagual is a more upscale hotel that is near both beaches. When visiting these beaches, make sure to bring enough supplies because there is not a convenience store nearby.

Playa el Coco
Playa el Coco, located just south of San Juan del Sur and surrounded by dense vegetation, boasts some of Nicaragua’s most kid-friendly surf and environment. There is also wildlife to consider. Your morning alarm will be howler monkeys, and urracas may take your meal.
Playa el Coco lies about a mile (2 kilometers) from Playa La Flor, one of the country’s most important turtle sanctuaries. It is rather usual to go there late at night in the hopes of spotting turtles breeding. The date is determined by lunar phases; the crescent moon is when the turtles like to emerge. La Flor is one of only seven beaches worldwide where you may witness a large turtle nesting. Three thousand or more turtles show up there at the same time. When watching turtles, keep in mind that the area is protected, so you must follow all of the rangers’ instructions.
