The final month of the recently concluded financial year (2022/23) – March – saw a total of 328,124 vehicles driven out of dealerships into the homes of their new owners.
With carmakers needing to meet new BS VI OBD2 emission norms from the 1st of April, deals helped push vehicles into new homes in March, resulting in an uptick in both Year-over-Year (Y-o-Y) and Month-over-Month(M-o-M) metrics.
Y-o-Y numbers for March 2023 rose by 16.61 per cent (46,739 units) compared to the 281,385 units sold over the same period in 2022. M-o-M metrics were in the black by 16.03 per cent (45,325 units) compared to the 282,799 units sold in February 2022.

The Top 5
Maruti Suzuki continued to top the charts with the nation’s largest carmaker selling 137,201 vehicles in March 2023. Maruti Suzuki’s Y-o-Y metrics rose by 15.83 per cent (18,755 units) compared to March 2022’s sales figures of 118,446 units. M-o-M numbers also rose by 15.40 per cent (18,309 units) compared to Feb’s 118,892 units.
Tata Motors took second place on the sales charts for March 2023 selling a total of 46,847 units. Tata’s Y-o-Y numbers rose by 26.82 per cent (9,908 units) compared to March 2022’s 36,939 units. M-o-M metrics also rose by 20.23 per cent (7,882 units) compared to Feb 2023’s 38,965 units.
Hyundai finished March in 3rd overall, selling 45,703 vehicles last month. Y-o-Y metrics were up by 4.43 per cent (1,937 units) compared to March 2022’s 43,766 units. M-o-M numbers rose by 16.87 per cent (6,597 units) when compared to February’s 39,106 units.
SUV specialist Mahindra was in 4th selling 32,196 units last month. Mahindra’s Y-o-Y metrics were up by 34.07 per cent (8,182 units) compared to last March’s 24,014 units while M-o-M figures rose by 9.67 per cent (6,597 units) compared to Feb’s 29,356 units.
Kia is next on the list with the South Korean firm selling 21,023 units last month. Kia’s Y-o-Y numbers were up by 20.64 per cent (3,597 units) compared to March 2022’s 17,426 vehicles sold. M-o-M numbers also rose by 7.51 per cent compared to the 19,554 units sold in February 2023.

Toyota came in the sixth spot selling 15,623 units last month. The Japanese firm’s Y-o-Y numbers rose by 39.55 per cent (4,428 units) compared to March 2022’s 11,195 units. M-o-M metrics were up by 29.46 per cent (3,555 units) compared to the 12,068 units sold in February.
The Volkswagen Group (Skoda & VW) was next in line with the German conglomerate selling 7,837 units last month. The VW Group’s Y-o-Y numbers rose by 9.07 per cent (652 units) compared to March 2022’s 7,185 units. M-o-M metrics were also in the black, rising by 16.78 per cent (1,126 units) compared to 6,711 units sold in Feb.
In the 8th spot was Honda, with the Japanese marque selling 6,295 units last month. Honda’s Y-o-Y numbers dipped by 17.77 per cent (1,360 units) compared TO March 2022’s 7,655 units. However, M-o-M metrics were in the black, rising by 9.59 per cent (551 units) compared to Feb’s 5,744 units.
Renault claimed the 9th spot with 5,176 vehicles sold in March 2023. The French carmaker’s Y-o-Y numbers dropped by 24.21 per cent (1,653 units) compared to March 2022’s 6,829 units. However, M-o-M figures were up by 260 units or 5.29 per cent compared to Feb’s 4,916 units.
Claiming the final spot on our list is MG which sold 4,655 vehicles last month. MG’s Y-o-Y numbers rose by 30.2 per cent (1,082 units) compared to March 2022’s 3,583 units. M-o-M numbers were also in the black, rising by 29.44 per cent (1,061 units) compared to Feb’s 3,604 units.
Final Thoughts On Car Sales From March 2023
The Indian car market continues its resurrection post-pandemic and with many carmakers posting record numbers for the previous financial year we find ourselves excited about just how much it can grow in the near future.
