February 2023 saw 282,799 vehicles reach new homes as per details released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The Indian 4-wheeler industry like its two and three-wheeler compatriots grew in terms of retail sales compared to Feb 2022.
Year-over-Year car sales rose by 13.05 per cent (32,653 units) compared to Feb 2022 when 250,146 four-wheelers were sold. However, Month-over-Month sales dipped by 15.74 per cent (52,845 units) compared to the first month of the year, when 335,644 units were sold.
Let’s take a deeper look at the top 10 bestselling car brands from February 2023 and see how they performed in the shortest month of the year…
1) Maruti Suzuki – 118,892 Units
India’s largest carmaker sold a total of 118,892 units in February 2023 as per data released by FADA. Maruti’s Y-o-Y numbers were in the black rising by 8.47 per cent (9,281 units) compared to the 109,611 vehicles sold in Feb 2022.
However, M-o-M numbers for India’s largest carmaker were in the red, dropping by 20.76 per cent or 31,154 units compared to the 150,046 units sold in Jan 2023.
2) Hyundai – 39,106 Units
South Korean carmaker Hyundai once again just about managed to stave off Tata Motors to take the 2nd spot on our list, selling 39,106 units in Feb 2022.
Hyundai’s Y-o-Y numbers rose slightly by 1.08 per cent (418 units) compared to the 38,688 units sold in Feb 2022. M-o-M numbers though dropped by 14.61 per cent (6,693 units) compared to Jan’s 45,799 units.
3) Tata Motors – 38,965 Units
Tata Motors sold 38,965 units in Feb 2023 according to FADA’s data. Tata’s Y-o-Y sales were up by 14.42 per cent (4,910 units) compared to the 34,055 units sold in Feb 2022.
Tata’s M-o-M numbers like the others on the podium fell by 13.53 per cent (6,096 units). Tata Motors sold 45,061 units in January 2023.
4) Mahindra – 29,356 Units
Mahindra sold a total of 29,356 units last month. Mahindra’s sales numbers were up Y-o-Y with the SUV specialist’s retail numbers rising by a massive 60.73 per cent (11,092 units) compared to Feb 22.
However, like the other three manufacturers before it, Mahindra’s M-o-M numbers were in the red, dropping by 12.91 per cent (4,350 units). Mahindra sold 33,706 units in the first month of 2023.
5) Kia – 19,554 Units
Kia was one of the few manufacturers on this list to be in the black in terms of both Y-o-Y and M-o-M sales with the South Korean firm selling 19,554 vehicles last month.
Kia’s Year-over-Year numbers rose by 43.54 per cent or 5,931 units compared to Feb 2022 when it sold 13,623 vehicles. M-o-M numbers rose slightly by 1.33 per cent (257 units) compared to 19,297 vehicles sold in Jan 2023.
6) Toyota – 12,068 Units
Japanese carmaker Toyota sold a total of 12,068 passenger vehicles in the shortest month of 2023. Like Kia, Toyota was one of the few manufacturers that saw sales rise in terms of both Y-o-Y and M-o-M parameters.
Y-o-Y numbers for Toyota rose by 50.49 per cent (4,049 units) compared to Feb 2022’s 8,019 units. M-o-M numbers grew by 10.30 per cent ( 1,127 units) from January’s 10,941 units.
7) Skoda-Volkswagen – 6,711 Units
The VW group in India, which is spearheaded by Skoda sold 6,711 vehicles last month. The VW Group saw its sales rise by 24.51 per cent (1,321 units) Y-o-Y compared to Feb 22 when it sold 5,390 units.
M-o-M numbers dropped by 20.87 per cent (1,770 units) compared to January, when the VW group sold 8,841 cars and SUVs.
8) Honda – 5,744 Units
Japanese carmaker Honda had a torrid February 2023 with both Y-o-Y and M-o-M numbers dipping into the red as it sold just 5,744 units last month.
Honda’s Y-o-Y sales dipped by 30.66 per cent (2,540 units) compared to Feb 2022 when it sold 8,284 cars. M-o-M numbers dipped by 22.46 per cent (1,664 units) compared to the 7,408 vehicles sold in January 2023.
9) Renault – 4,916 Units
French carmaker Renault was another manufacturer having a red month in February as it sold 4,916 units.
Renault’s Y-o-Y numbers dropped by 23.01 per cent (1,469 units) compared to the 6,385 vehicles sold on Feb 22. M-o-M sales dropped by 32.62 per cent (2,380 units) compared to the 7,296 vehicles sold in Jan 2023.
10) MG – 3,604 Units
MG is the third and final of the carmakers on this list that found itself in the black for February when it sold 3,604 units.
Y-o-Y sales rose by 1.01 per cent or 36 units compared to Feb 22 when it sold 3,568 vehicles. MG’s M-o-M sales rose by 9.91 per cent or 325 units compared to the 3,279 EVs and SUVs sold last month.
