The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric now claims to have the best-in-class, all-electric range of up to 400 km.
NEW YORK, NY: At this year’s New York International Auto Show, Hyundai launched three key vehicles lead by the 2019 Kona all electric compact CUV boasting a range of up to 400 km.
Unveiled simultaneously in New York and at the Vancouver Auto Show, the Kona Electric is built on a new platform.
To reach the estimated 400 km (250 mile) range, the Kona’s propulsion is through a 150 kW (201 hp, 291 lb/ft of torque) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor supplied by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery.
Hyundai says the 356-volt liquid-cooled battery pack produces 170 kW and weights under 1,000 lb.
Using a Level III charger, a full charge can be reached in 55 minutes and nine hours and 50 minutes with a Level II charger. The Kona’s charger port is in the nose of the vehicle.
In Canada, it will be fitted with a standard heat pump to reduced electric draw when heating the cabin in winter. By using the air conditioning system, but in reverse, it adjusts the coolant circulation to use the heat generated by the motor and inverter to warm the cabin.
Kona will have a full suite of driver/safety features including Lane-Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Parking Distance Warning and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection.
The infotainment system with eight-inch touchscreen comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the navigation system is supplied with free map updates for five years.
Hyundai engineers were able to achieve a lower cargo floor, and with the rear split-fold flat, it allows the Kona Electric to have the same cargo volume is the gasoline-powered model at 544 litres.
Along standard features are heated front seats, heated steering wheel, proximity key, and seven-inch colour LCD electroluminescent gauge cluster.
An optional head-up display projects a virtual image onto the transparent panel mounted behind the instrument panel thus helping the driver to keep his/her eyes on the road.
HYUNDAI TUCSON 2019:
The compact Tucson CUV comes with a new look inside and out and a host of enhancements like standard Forward Collision Avoidance Assist and the new cascading grille treatment.
Two engines will be offered – a 2.0-litre, direct injection four-cylinder (164 hp, 151 lb/ft of torque) and a 2.4-litre direct-injection four-cylinder (181 hp, 175 lb/ft) with a six-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission with sequential manual shift and a lock-up torque converter for better fuel consumption at highway speeds.
HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2019:
Available in five- and seven-seat configurations, the 2019 Santa Fe adopts the brand’s new cascading grille design language with a composite headlight look with LED daytime running lights
The cabin feature premium touches like a three-dimensional instrument panel and seats with contracting stitching.
The suspension has been reworked for improve ride comfort and stability. An optional self load-levelling suspension provides constant ride heights with heavier cargo or when towing.
And interesting safety feature is called Safe Exit Assist that momentarily prevents doors from being opened when a vehicle approaches from behind even when the doors are unlocked.
When the Safe Exit Assist detects an approaching object rearward it sounds an alert for passengers, a warning pops up on the driver’s centre cluster and, most importantly, the doors remain locked.
