2023 updates for the North American version of the Corolla
, Toyota has now done the same for its compact sedan for Europe as well. Like its counterpart across the Atlantic, it gets the brand’s latest-generation hybrid tech allowing it to pack more punch, while still improving its fuel efficiency. Plus, because the ASEAN Corolla Altis is based off the European version, this could be our first look at what we stand to get by next year.
Straight to the point, the 2023 Corolla packs a choice between two new hybrid systems. The first is seen in the Corolla Cross Hybrid which combines a 2.0-liter motor with an electric motor enough for 196 horsepower and a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 7.5 seconds. Interestingly, a 1.8-liter version is also made available and this one has 140 horsepower (up 18 horsepower from the current) which brings down the 0 to 100 km/h time to just 9.2 seconds (down 1.7 seconds). Along with the stronger engines, the 2023 Corolla’s battery pack is now lighter thanks to its lithium-ion construction (mass reduced by 18 kilograms).
Punchier engines aside, improved drivability and acceleration feel is a Toyota promises here and was done through a recalibration of the hybrid control.
Outside, the 2023 Corolla is distinguishable with its new front grille mesh pattern, fog light bezel, and alloy wheel design. Higher-trim models also get adaptive high beams as well. Inside, the 2023 Corolla gains a 10.5-inch infotainment screen that’s upgradable Over-The-Air (OTA), while the driver gets a new 12.3-inch combimeter which can be customized in four different modes including one called Tough. These changes aside, Toyota’s trusty compact gets new trims, upholstery, and patterns for a more contemporary feel.
Safety-wise, the Toyota Safety Sense system has been upgraded to include acceleration suppression which reacts to sudden use of the accelerator when traveling at low speeds, collision avoidance support even at intersections, emergency steering assist, and a safe exit assist system.
Toyota says the refreshed Corolla will go on sale in Europe by 2023. It’s likely that other markets, including ASEAN, will follow soon thereafter.
