Toyota South Africa has removed the GT86 from its website, signaling the end of the current rear-wheel-drive, no-frills-attached sports car.
Luckily, however, the launch of the latest model is just around the corner.
“The current model has been removed from the line-up in preparation of the new generation, which is scheduled for a Q1 [2022] introduction,” said Toyota.
“[The] GT86 has been a customer-order-only model for a while, and as such, with the new-generation model on the horizon and ordering cycles, it is no longer available for order.”
Only one GR 86 model will be landing locally, said the company, with final specifications not been confirmed as yet.
What to expect
The upcoming Toyota GR 86 is part of the Gazoo Racing family and we have a good idea of what to expect.
The GR 86 will be launched with a 2.4-litre Boxer engine, up from the 2.0-litre unit in the outgoing model.
The new motor generates 172kW and 250Nm of torque.
Other new additions include functional air ducts and side-rocker panels, as well as a 50% stiffer chassis.
“These will help the new model achieve expected best-in-class handling and stability,” said Toyota.
On the inside, the new GR 86 is exceedingly more modern than its older sibling.
It comes with a 7-inch infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, climate control, leather upholstery, and the Subaru EyeSight system.
The latter enables pre-collision braking and throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and sway warning, reverse automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Additionally, the company said that the GR will closely match the dimensions of the GT.
As such, the new GR 86 sits at 1,310mm high, 1,775mm wide, and 4,265mm long.
It is worth noting that the above-mentioned specifications are not final, and that the model which launches in South African may differ.
