Toyota’s next Gazoo Racing product gets an official date.
Toyota
- Toyota will reveal the GR Corolla at 9:30 p.m. EST Thursday.
- The teaser photo shows the GR Corolla is likely wider than the standard Corolla and could feature all-wheel drive or a high-performance four-cylinder engine.
- Toyota has not yet released any performance figures or details.
The Toyota GR Yaris is a rally-bred hot hatch that is so over-the-top that it’s helping springboard the GR brand in markets that don’t even get the GR Yaris: Namely, the United States. Capitalizing on this ridiculous hot hatch, Toyota is giving the Gazoo Racing treatment to the Corolla. While details are still light about the upcoming Toyota GR Corolla, we have some information and an official reveal date.
The information is limited basically to the two pictures you see here. It seems the GR Corolla is significantly wider than the standard Corolla. This is judging exclusively from the wider fenders and added vents. It’s hard to say if the vents are functional, but they might help funnel hot air away from the brakes.
The team at Toyota also showed off the side skirt, which is emblazoned with GR Four. This either implies the GR Corolla won’t sport the three-cylinder found under the hood of the GR Yaris and opt for a four-cylinder, or that this GR Corolla will be all-wheel drive. Considering the similar GT-Four badge historically refers to AWD, it will likely be the latter.
Toyota
We’re waiting for official information about every part of the GR Corolla, which should be coming soon. Team Toyota says they are showing off the GR Corolla this Thursday. The GR Corolla presentation is set to show on Vimeo 9:30 p.m. EST that night, so any speculation and questions will be put to rest in just a few days.
Toyota highlighted the expanding GR lineup and shared another teaser of the GR Corolla on YouTube, suggesting Toyota remains interested in making fun internal-combustion cars even though the market is leaning toward electrification.
