It’s official, the Toyota Crown is coming to America, possibly in SUV form. It won’t replace the Crown sedan, and it will still be available in other countries, like China. This move makes sense as we’re pretty SUV obsessed in the United States.
But this move is a bit odd. Why is the Crown SUV coming to America? Reportedly, it’s going green and will be a hybrid. Toyota has the RAV4 hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, Venza, and Prius. That’s a lot of options.
The Crown has seven seats, making it most comparable to the Toyota Highlander and Toyota 4Runner. But we don’t see either of these incredibly popular options leaving to make space for the Crown.
Perhaps the new Toyota Crown is coming to replace the Toyota Venza, which hasn’t been as popular compared to other options. The Venza sold 61,988 units in 2021, while the Highlander sold 264,128 models.
But the Venza might not get discontinued. If the Toyota Grand Highlander comes out as a larger SUV model, then the Venza could stick around as a smaller option.
What to expect with the Crown SUV
The new Toyota Crown is currently a mystery. Toyota recently filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the Crown title for automobiles and structural parts thereof.
According to MotorTrend, the Crown name could be applied to a luxurious trim level that applies to multiple models such as the Highlander, RAV4, or even the Sienna. We will have to wait to learn more.
The 2023 Toyota Crown SUV could arrive by the end of 2022. Some rumors suggest that it will be more expensive than the Toyota Sequioa. However, as a smaller option, it could cost less. Hybrid and electric powertrain options are potential as well.
Currently, in other countries, the Crown Kluger looks like the Highlander. It has a 2.5-liter engine with 189 hp and can tow up to 4,409 lbs.
Is the Crown better than the Toyota Venza?

Maybe, we need to learn more to make that determination. The 2022 Toyota Venza has an MSRP of $32,890, making it expensive compared to the 2022 Toyota RAV4, which starts at $26,525.
The Venza is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to crank out 219 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds. It can tow about 3,500 lbs.
While the Venza has standard AWD, a peacefully quiet interior, and a smooth ride, it lacks cargo space and capability compared to rivals. It’s a great, comfortable, and efficient daily driver that seems to be missing something.
Perhaps the Toyota Crown will offer more cargo space, a sportier ride, and more off-roading capability. We will keep you updated as we learn more.
