The 6th generation of the Opel Corsa is now available in South Africa.
Along with it comes a new look, new features, and a new price.
The exterior of the new Corsa has been redesigned from the ground up and differentiates itself clearly from its predecessor.
Part of the redesign includes a longer bonnet that sits lower than before, causing the windscreen to stand steeper and results in a lower roofline which gives the car a more powerful stance on the road.
The front and rear bumpers have also been given a new look, and the car now slots in line with the modern competitors.
Angular lines runs down the side of the body, too, accentuating the redesigned tail lights, boot lid, and more pronounced spoiler on the rear.
Additionally, a grained black b-pillar and sporty 16-inch alloy wheels gives the new Corsa an aggressive look.
As standard, every car will receive front and rear fog lamps and daytime running lights with automatic functionalities.
New features
The fresh design of the Corsa extends into the interior, with the main focus of the dashboard layout being the driver.
This is apparent in the slight angling of all the instruments toward the driver’s seat.
Fitted as standard in every model is a 7-inch IntelliLink infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and the system offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.
It can be controlled either through touch inputs, buttons on the steering wheel, or voice commands – and is connected to a 6-speaker sound system throughout the passenger compartment.
A 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera then fills up the infotainment display once you start reversing.
A second, smaller Driver Information Center (DIC) screen fits into the instrument cluster, and this is where you can see information such as your remaining range and tyre pressure.
Boot capacity for this segment remains on par at 309 litres, but can be extended to 1,081 litres if needed.
Another feature includes the new flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel where controls for the DIC, cruise control, and infotainment system are located.
Every Corsa “Edition” model is then fitted with fabric seats, power adjustable side mirrors and windows, and a manually adjustable air-conditioner as standard.
Safety was not forgotten, and features including all-round airbags, an electronic stability programme, hill-start assist, emergency braking assist, park-assist, and cruise control with speed limiter and speed limit adaptation have been fitted.
Price and performance
Under the hood there is a 1.2-litre petrol engine which has won the International Engine of the Year award for four years in a row – according to the company.
The non-turbocharged motor produces a maximum output of 55kW and 118Nm of torque, and is connected to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
This combination of a low displacement engine and a total car weight of 980kg lets the new Corsa achieve a claimed combined fuel consumption of 5.8l/100km.
At launch only the Opel Corsa Edition 1.2N will be available locally, with a starting price of R289,900.
With this you will receive a 3-year/120,000km warranty and a 3-year/45,000km service plan.
