Consumer Reports‘ reliability rankings come from the help of real car owners. Every year, owners are surveyed about how reliable their car was, and the results of those surveys help Consumer Reports determine the reliability score of those cars. For cars that don’t have enough survey data, the car critic will come up with a predicted reliability rating instead.
It’s a similar story for brands. As Consumer Reports wrote, “brands are ranked on average predicted reliability, based on CR member surveys.” Unsurprisingly, Toyota is the most reliable car brand overall, and it wasn’t that close.
In fact, Lexus, which is owned by Toyota, came in at second place. The Japanese auto giant scored so well thanks to its four most reliable models, which were the Corolla, the Corolla Hybrid, the Corolla Cross, and the Prius.
The Corolla Cross and the Corolla Hybrid are extremely reliable Toyotas
The Corolla Cross is one of Toyota’s newest options in its lineup, and it’s very reliable. Meanwhile, the Corolla Hybrid is not that new, but it’s very reliable too. That being said, while the two share the Corolla name, they aren’t actually that similar. The Corolla Cross is a subcompact SUV, while the Corolla Hybrid is the hybrid version of the popular compact sedan.
According to U.S. News, the Corolla Cross scored well in terms of reliability and safety, but it did worse elsewhere. The Corolla Cross has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and it gets 169 hp. It’s the only engine option on this Toyota SUV, and it’s not that great. It’s too weak to make the Corolla Cross fun to drive, but it’s fuel efficient. It gets 31 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on highways, for 32 mpg combined.
The Corolla Cross starts at about $22,500, while the Corolla Hybrid starts at about $24,000. Thanks to the Toyota’s hybrid powertrain, it gets an estimated 52 mpg combined. That said, it’s not that different from the regular Corolla overall.
The Prius and the regular Corolla are also very reliable
The good news is that the regular Corolla is also one of Toyota’s most reliable cars. In fact, according to RepairPal, the Corolla is the most reliable compact car on the market. It’s also affordable, as it starts at about $21,500. Plus, for the 2023 model year, Toyota gave the Corolla some updated engines.
The compact sedan starts with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that gets 169 hp, and the Japanese automaker offers a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that gets 300 hp. Since it’s a small car, its fuel economy is going to be great even with the gas-engine. The Corolla’s standard 2.0-liter gets 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on highways, for 37 mpg combined.
But of course, the Prius is another fuel-efficient and reliable option in Toyota’s lineup. It starts at about $25,000, which makes it the most expensive option of the four cars mentioned.
There’s no way around it, the Prius’ powertrain is weak, as it gets just 121 hp. However, it gets 58 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on highways, for 56 mpg combined. Furthermore, thanks to its hatchback shape, the Prius has a max cargo capacity of 50.7 cu. ft.
