Toyota unleashed its latest-generation Tundra late last year and circled back with the addition of its posh Capstone trim. Toyota looked to update its large Sequoia SUV and bring it up to date. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia follows the Tundra’s updates as it enters its third generation. The Sequoia sees new styling, a new powertrain, and the aforementioned Capstone trim level.
Under the hood is Toyota’s new I-Force Max 3.5-liter turbocharged V6, the new hybrid powertrain making 437 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. Managing all that power is a 10-speed automatic transmission that feeds either the rear wheels or the part-time four-wheel-drive system. Sequoia TRD Pro models come solely in four-wheel drive form.
The new Sequoia sees more than just new styling and a new engine; updates extend underneath, too. Supporting the Sequoia’s structure is a fully boxed frame borrowed from the Toyota Tundra and the Lexus LX. The Sequoia sports an independent front suspension that’s likely similar to the double-wishbone design in the Tundra, and a multi-link rear suspension. Available adaptive suspensions help those who plan to tow with the Sequoia with its maximum tow rating to 9000 pounds. Also making its way to the Sequoia is a rack-mounted electric power-assist system, which should make the new Sequoia feel more connected to the road.
As you’d expect from a large SUV, there’s no shortage of cabin configurations and space. The second row is available with either captain’s chairs or a bench. The third row can now slide and features an adjustable cargo-shelf system. More importantly, if you have to haul, you can fold down the third row to give you more cargo space.
For the driver and passenger, you’ll see a standard 14-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. The infotainment system also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which should help you stay connected to your phone as much as possible. Though, wireless charging doesn’t enter the conversation until the Sequoia’s Platinum trim level, so you still might need to bring a phone charger along for the ride.
Toyota says that the 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be available this summer, but doesn’t yet mention a new price. Expect a small bump from the current $50,500 starting price.
