The battle for the best full-size pickup truck on Consumer Reports is hard-fought. Although CR struggles to make room in its heart for the big boys, the 2022 Ram 1500 has remained in the top spot for a minute. But now that the 2022 Toyota Tundra is out, the Ram finally got some competition. Although the Ram is still in first place, there are only two reasons why the 2022 Toyota Tundra lost to the 2022 Ram 1500.

2022 Ram 1500 Vs. 2022 Toyota Tundra
The 2022 Ram 1500 is a great truck in many ways. Most importantly for Consumer Reports, the Ram 1500 is one of the most luxurious and comfortable pickup trucks. While the 2022 Toyota Tundra just got a massive makeover – the first in 15 years – it still pales in comparison with respect to luxury and comfort.
The main reason Consumer Reports gets fussy about trucks is because of how big, cumbersome, stiff, and clumsy they are. I understand that these are kind of different things, but they all circle around a singular point; how easy are trucks to live with every day? Consumer Reports believes that most pickup trucks aren’t very easy or comfortable to live with day in and day out. And as such, the Tundra’s lack of interior comfort and poor handling hold it back.
So it makes sense that the most comfortable full-size pickup truck would be CR’s favorite. Now, the 2022 Toyota Tundra, despite its many updates, still handles like it’s on stilts, has a stiff rear end, and a nosy-ish cabin.

Despite it losing to the Ram, the Toyota Tundra has many new and exciting features. According to CR, The new Toyota Tundra is fast, roomy, and powerful. After 15 years of stagnation, the Tundra’s upgrades look pretty shiny. CR says the best part of the new Tundra is the “silky-smooth” 389-horsepower, 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. If that 389 hp is appealing, just wait till you feel the 479-lb-ft of torque.
Part of the brilliance of this powertrain is its hybrid power support. However, much like the Ford F-150 PowerBoost, Toyota didn’t make this for efficiency but instead for performance. The new Tundra only gets 17 mpg combined. Not great. But with power figures like that, maybe it’s worth it.
The 2022 Tundra also get a new rear suspension that is, in some ways, more impactful than the cool new engine. Even though Consumer Reports points out that the Ram 1500’s rear suspension is still better, switching from leaf springs to coils made a huge difference in the Tundra’s ride. To be clear, CR says, “the Tundra’s ride is now merely tolerable….”

The 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at $34,950. However, the price tag can run as high as $74,230, which is pretty shocking. I’m not sure how anyone could argue that spending nearly $75k on a Tundra makes any sense. However, the lower-end and middling models are still great trucks, despite the pricy sticker.
Regardless of price, the 2022 Tundra is a strong, reliable, quick, spacious, and decent-looking pickup truck. That said, It’s just not as nice as the 2022 Ram 1500.
