I have spent the better part of the week with the 2022 GMC Yukon AT4. Aside from the beautiful interior, insane commitment to comfort, and a stylish and surprisingly tough-looking exterior, there has really only been one thing I have been able to think of while driving my white school bus loaner; this thing is huge. Whether it’s due to the crowded Manhattan streets or it’s actually just that big, the size of the SUV is hard to not think about.

The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 is a big SUV
Going from the 2022 BMW 330e to the GMC Yukon was nothing short of whiplash. The Yukon is a commanding force, indeed. Within moments of driving the beastly SUV, It felt both too big for Manhattan and felt unstoppable at the same time. All at once, the sea of pesky yellow cabs and buzzing scooters felt more like pollen in the air, a presence felt but not overly considered. It was amazing.

Obviously, the sheer size of the SUV is what gives it its value. These days, it feels like the American automotive industry believes bigger is better, period. Although I certainly don’t believe that, I have enjoyed the challenge of driving the colossal GMC through the absurd street of NYC. But once I had enough of that, I took it to New Jersey, where the GMC Yukon really came into its own.

What engine does the 2022 GMC Yukon have?
The press loaner we have has the 6.2-liter V8 making an enormous 420 hp. Despite the things colossal size and weight, the 6.2-liter V8 might drink an ocean full of fuel, but it’ll get the Yukon moving like a horse heading back home.
According to Car and Driver, the smaller gas-engine option is the 355-hp 5.3-liter V8. But the real show starts with the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six that makes a whopping 460 pound-feet of torque. Despite the fact that this luxury SUV might not be asked to use that hauling torque all that often if you need it, it’s there.

Easily the best part of the Yukon’s size is the interior. Not only is there a ton of it, but our AT4 trim also came beautifully finished in a variety of materials, a lovely two-tone upholstery, and the most comfortable captain’s chairs I’ve ever sat in.
The interior was it for me. This cartoonishly huge SUV went from stressful to navigating around the city to a refuge. The cabin is comfortable, quiet, and attractive. If for any reason, you somehow need more room up front, the center console has an optional feature where it can slide back and forth along a 10-in track with the push of a button.
Let’s not forget the full-blown, dual-zone entertainment system living in the middle row of the Yukon AT4. There are two built-in 12-inch screens behind the front two seats. These screens not only can play media but also can show vehicle info like infotainment screens. Unlike the old flip-out style, these screens look modern and sleek. In fact, I didn’t even notice them until my second drive in the 2022 GMC Yukon AT4.
Is the 2022 GMC Yukon good on gas?

Objectively? No. However, with respect to its size and power, it could be a lot worse. The 2022 GMC Yukon AT with the massive 6.2-liter V8 gets 14 mpg in town and 19 mpg on the highway. Considering its lack of fuel economy and the massive 24-gallon gas tank, the Yukon might be a rough one to gas up these days.
Using the national average price of gasoline, $4.33, the Yukon will cost you roughly $104 to fill up. With a full 24-gallon-tank, the Yukon can run approximately 384 miles before filling up again.
Is the GMC Yukon AT4 worth it?
Tough to say. I have genuinely enjoyed driving it, at least when I get out of the city. Even in the city, although a bit nerve-racking, the Yukon handles nicely and always did what I expected it to do. If driving big vehicles and spending boatloads in fuel isn’t your thing, then the Yukon might not be for you.
But, if you care not for your bank account and the commanding and admittedly intoxicating and powerful driving position hit you right in that sweet spot, then I doubt there are many other SUVs that will scratch the itch quite like the 2022 GMC Yukon AT4.
