Tesla is set to have record production at its Shanghai Gigafactory in August with an expected production of around 82,500 EVs for the month. Production is expected to see an increase of 192% month-over-month in August when compared with July.
This would be the first time Tesla has produced over 80,000 EVs in a month from a single production facility.
What does this mean for thousands of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners who are yet to receive their new cars in Australia?

That’s also a 86% year-on-year production increase when compared to August 2021 production from this plant which also supplied every Tesla delivered to Australia so far in 2022.
The exact number of cars produced at Tesla GigaShanghai in August will be released in the second week of September when China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released their data.
Thousands of Teslas to arrive in Australia before the end of 2022
Thousands of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y EVs are also expected to arrive in Australia before the end of the year. That’s on the back of strong local demand for Tesla’s EVs throughout the year.
Much of the production last month was down due to upgrades needed to ramp production at the plant to record levels. We saw this a couple of weeks ago when official July production & sales figures were released showing only 28,219 EVs produced in Shanghai.

The production upgrades are now complete setting the stage for a record couple of months to follow. With over 80,000 EVs made in the factory in a single month, the backlog of Australian orders is expected to come down quite a bit over the next couple of months.
With the majority of the plant’s production focused on Model Ys, Australia has seen one of the quickest launch and delivery events of any car released in Australia. Orders for this very popular EV SUV opened in early June and deliveries have already started for some very lucky Model Y owners since the beginning of August.
There are thousands more orders to be fulfilled and with Shanghai production scaled to an annual output of 1 million EVs, our roads are going to have lots of cleaner vehicles on them over the coming months and years.
