Tesla has had a bumper year for EV sales so far, already exceeding the number of EVs it sold in 2022. As part of this growth, the leading EV maker has now started hiring apprentice vehicle technicians across the country.
Tesla’s careers page in Australia shows “Apprentice Vehicle Technician” roles across most states and territories, including Hobart.
The job description covers what Tesla is looking for from future EV technicians: “This is a hands-on technical role where you’ll have an opportunity to learn from experienced Tesla Technicians and work with vehicles that are revolutionizing the automotive industry.”
Apprentices will need to be enrolled in a 4-year training program to help them become certified technicians to be able to work on EVs.

In 2023 so far, the EV fleet in Australia has exceeded last year’s total sales volumes and the total EV fleet has surpassed 100,000 EVs on our roads.
Most of this fleet is relatively new but as it ages over a period of time, repairs and maintenance will still form part of keeping these cars on the road. Well over half the electric vehicles sold in Australia were made by Tesla.
Although having required less maintenance on the drivetrain compared to an ICE vehicle, there are other areas in EV that would still need a trained workforce to work on.

It will be a combination of hardware maintenance along with software solutions that will keep these EVs on the road, for longer.
As the fleet of Tesla vehicles continues to grow and many other EV brands bringing new models to the market in recent years, it’s good to see efforts being made to ensure we have a trained workforce ready to support the sector.
Apprenticeships in EV-related technologies will encourage people to consider this as a career and to be part of this EV transition. The applications are open now with the program expected to start in January 2024.
We hope to see more manufacturers introduce similar roles as part of structured programs to develop EV skills needed for Australia’s future with EVs.
