Tesla has confirmed that Model Y deliveries for customers in the US are now underway, some two years before buyers in Britain will be able to get their hands on the budget electric SUV.
Announced via the company’s Twitter account, the Model Y is now on the driveway of those who placed their orders moments after the EV made its grand debut at the firm’s design studio in Hawthorne, California, a year ago.
The first examples to reach customers are the more expensive models: the Long Range Dual Motor and Performance cars. The Dual Motor offers the best range at 314 miles, while the Performance model offers 298 miles and a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds.
A Standard Range model, which comes with a lower range and price, is expected to arrive in the US next year. There’s official word on how many miles you get from the Standard Range just yet. As it shares 75% of its components with the Model 3, there’s chance it’ll match the equivalent saloon’s 254-mile range.
In the US, the Model Y Dual Motor carries a price tag of around $47,000 (£39,000), which is $4,310 (£3,570) more than the equivalent Model 3. Therefore, we can expect the Model Y to carry a price tag that’s just below the £50,000 mark when it goes on sale in the UK.
