South Africa is a popular market for special-edition bakkies, with the newest entry being the limited-edition Ford Ranger Stormtrak.
This bakkie is due for local market introduction later in 2021, and follows several special vehicles released by competing manufacturers.

Ford Ranger Raptor
The Ford Ranger Raptor is a hardcore variant of the standard Ranger.
The built-up bakkie features Fox shock absorbers, unique body panels, 20% larger brakes, specially-developed BF Goodrich tyres, and a luxurious interior with Raptor-exclusive design elements.
It also debuted the engine that is fitted in the Ranger Thunder and Stormtrak models – a 2.0-litre, bi-turbo motor developing 157kW and 500Nm.
This motor is paired to a 10-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to all four wheels. Six driving modes then cater to various terrains and allow the Ford to go nearly anywhere.
The Ranger Raptor also boasts a maximum payload capacity of 607kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,500kg.

Ford Ranger Thunder
The Thunder pack was made available in South Africa in early 2020, and its success led to the introduction of the Stormtrak, said Ford.
Available on the XLT and XLS models, the Thunder package adds the newest infotainment system, a leather upholstery with Thunder-exclusive design elements, a lockable load box, a unique front grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, and new driver assistance systems.
The Thunder package can be had with either a 3.2-litre, turbo-diesel engine or 2.0-litre, biturbo engine, with output ranging between 147-157kW and 470-500Nm.
This supports a maximum payload capacity of 924kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500kg.
The Ford Ranger Thunder has a South African starting price of R751,000 – which goes up to R830,900.
Included in the price is a 4-year/120,000km warranty, a 6-year/90,000km service plan, and 3-year/unlimited kilometre roadside assistance.
Isuzu D-Max Arctic
The Isuzu D-Max Arctic is based on the range-topping D-Max 300 and was developed in collaboration with Arctic Trucks – a company that creates high-riding bakkies.
Their influence on the D-Max Arctic is clear, as this model features increased ground clearance and a 180mm increase in overall length thanks to specially-developed body panels.
The Arctic is driven by a 3.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, putting out 130kW and 380Nm.
This allows a maximum payload capacity of 911kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,100kg.
The Isuzu D-Max 300 Arctic has a South African price of R906,900 – which includes a 5-year/120,000km warranty, a 5-year/90,000km service plan, and 5-year/120,000km roadside assistance.
Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme
The Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme specification package is a R40,000 add-on that gives the customer R100,000 worth of value, said the company.
It brings a list of extras that leaves no body part untouched, with exterior badging, a custom grille and bumpers, a tonneau cover, a sports gear shifter, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.
The Xtreme is then fitted with a 2.4-litre, turbo-diesel engine that produces 133kW and 430Nm – connected to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The result is a maximum payload capacity of 1,030kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,100kg.
The Mitsubishi Triton 4×4 Xtreme has a South African price of R699,995 – which includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty, a 5-year/90,000km service plan, and 5-year/unlimited kilometre roadside assistance.
Bonus: Toyota Hilux Legend RS
Strictly speaking, the Toyota Hilux Legend RS is not a special edition – but it is on par with these bakkies in terms of price, looks, features, and power.
The RS is a newly-added trim line for this generation of Hilux and provides a lockable roller shutter over the loadbox.
Inside, it offers a leather upholstery, a Toyota Connect infotainment system, and Toyota Safety Sense.
Power is then provided by a 2.8-litre, turbo-diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that generates 150kW and 500Nm.
This allows a maximum payload capacity of 775kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500kg.
The Toyota Hilux 4×4 Legend RS has a South African price of R876,800 – which includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000km service plan.
