Although headquartered in South Korea, like many other volume automakers, Hyundai makes cars everywhere, including the U.S. Its Montgomery, Alabama plant makes a variety of models, including the current-gen Hyundai Santa Fe crossover/SUV. However, so far, Hyundai has kept hybrid production elsewhere. But that’s about to change with the Santa Fe Hybrid.

In a few months, the Alabama plant won’t just be building the regular Santa Fe. Hyundai is expanding the plant’s production capabilities to include the Santa Fe Hybrid. And in doing so, it becomes the automaker’s first American-built electrified vehicle. But Hyundai isn’t stopping there. From the sound of things, this hybrid crossover/SUV is just the first step toward Hyundai’s electric U.S. future.
