Ram famously makes one of the finest pickup trucks on the planet. The Ram 1500 has continuously won awards, impressed reviewers, and gone to work on job sites all over. It stands to reason that Consumer Reports would rank the 2022 Ram 1500 in the top spot for Full-sized pickup trucks. However, Ram holds another spot on the list, dead last. Ram has the best pickup truck and the worst pickup truck on Consumer Reports.
What’s the best full-sized pickup truck on Consumer Reports?
Consumer Reports named the Ram 1500 the best full-sized pickup truck again. CR has crushed on the Ram 1500 for years. There are a few reasons why CR and Ram customers are so pleased with the Ram 1500.
The 2022 Ram 1500 has one of, if not the most luxurious interior of any production pickup truck. Although Consumer Reports was a little fussy about the amount of hard plastics in the cabin, they do say that the mix of materials like cloth, leather, wood, and metal trim bits soften the harder aspects.
Aside from just the fit and finish, the Ram also boasts the most comfortable ride in the segment. CR says, “those who opt for the swanky Limited version get air suspension that elevates ride comfort to luxury sedan levels.”
While many aspects make the 2022 Ram 1500 a great truck, the last of the major pros are the multiple, powerful engine options. A 3.6-liter V6 making 305 hp comes standard. From there, engine options include a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel making 260 hp, a 5.7-liter V8 making 395 hp, and finally, the TRX’s 6.2-liter supercharged V8 making a tremendous 702 hp.
The 2022 Ram 1500 is relatively reliable, strong, comfortable, well-equipped, and exciting. It makes sense why so many people like it.
What is the worst full-sized pickup truck on Consumer Reports?
While the 2022 Ram 1500 is enjoying its place in the sun, the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic enjoys none of that glory. Consumer Reports ranked the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic in last place for full-sized pickup trucks. How could two seemingly similar trucks from the same manufacturer be so far apart?
Well, it’s because these two pickup trucks aren’t very similar at all. In fact, when Chrysler redesigned the Ram 1500 for the 2019 model year, Ram continued to sell the previous generation branded as the Ram 1500 Classic. While it may have been some clever marketing, Chrysler is basically just selling an admittedly outdated pickup truck.
The biggest issue for the Classic is that the reliability isn’t there. CR gave the Ram Classic a predicted reliability score of 1 out of 5. This paired with the horrendous gas mileage, caused CR to name this truck the worst full-sized pickup truck on the market.
That said, it’s only fair to note that the Ram 1500 Classic, for all its shortcomings, is still a Ram, meaning it has a lovely interior, an optional Hemi V8, and a smooth ride.
Which truck should you get?
2022 Ram 1500 | Stellantis
You might think this a silly question, considering the 2022 Ram 1500 is ranked first, and the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is ranked dead last. However, the Ram Classic does start at $10,000 cheaper than the Ram 1500. For many truck customers, this is all that matters.
As with most truck comparisons, Ram customers will have to decide for themselves if the extra money is worth it for a truck now five years more advanced.
