Hino Trucks, a U.S-based Toyota Group Company, has announced ‘Project Z’, the company’s development path to zero emissions vehicles, ranging from class 4 to class 8. Project Z will consist of demonstration vehicles in the first half of 2021, customer demonstrations in 2022, and production prior to 2024.
The initiative advances its environmental position, first established in 1991 with the global sale of its hybrid buses.
Hino and Toyota Motor North America have previously announced plans to to jointly develop a fuel cell electric truck for the North American market. The hydrogen-powered truck will offer heavy-duty capability and zero emissions.
This collaboration expands upon the existing effort to develop a 25-ton fuel cell electric truck for the Japanese market which was announced earlier in 2020.
Glenn Ellis, Hino’s Senior Vice President of Customer Experience, says: “Our holistic approach to working with technology leaders like Toyota, Hexagon Purus and Xos will result in a sustainable, low cost product line up that will meet the needs of our customers as our industry moves forward to zero emission vehicles. For customers ready to move in that direction now, the SEA Electric SEA-Drive® 120a paired with a Hino M Series chassis is commercially available today.”
Headquartered in Novi, Michigan, Hino Trucks manufactures, sells and services a line-up of Class 4-8 commercial trucks in the U.S.
