Consumer Reports recently released its final review of the 2022 Toyota Tundra, and overall, the site speaks highly of the pickup. However, despite its positive review of the Tundra, CR places one other model even higher in its roundup of full-size trucks. Read on to find out which model tops the list.
What does Consumer Reports think about the 2022 Toyota Tundra?

In its review of the 2022 Toyota Tundra, Consumer Reports notes it’s the first redesign the truck has seen in 15 years. The redesigned Tundra scores high marks for many of its features, which leads to its overall number-two spot in CR’s rankings of full-size pickups. However, the review notes some areas for improvement.
Among the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s many positives are its acceleration, roomy cabin, and towing capacity. Plus, the Tundra’s 389-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine can take it from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating full-size pickup. As for comfort, there’s much to be said for the wide front seats, headroom, and space for the driver’s right knee. Then there’s the Tundra’s impressive towing capacity of 11,160 pounds.
But with any vehicle, the Tundra also has some drawbacks. They include its agility and braking, along with the lack of an included automatic 4WD mode. Regarding agility, Consumer Reports says, “The steering is slow with an overly light feel, and as such, it requires more turning of the steering wheel than in most vehicles, which makes the truck feel clumsy.”
Braking tests also showed longer stop times than for similar full-size trucks CR tested. These negatives help explain why this truck placed second overall on CR’s list of full-size pickups.
The 2022 Ram 1500 beats the Toyota Tundra to top Consumer Reports’ list of full-size trucks
The thorn in the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s side is none other than the Ram 1500, which Consumer Reports calls “a kinder, gentler pickup truck in this crowded field.”
The 2022 Ram 1500 packs a powerful 5.7-liter V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, making for “a smooth, willing, and satisfying powertrain,” CR says. The site rates the Ram especially highly for the smoothness of its ride and low noise levels, along with seat comfort and cargo room. In addition, the Ram boasts an impressive 12,750-pound towing capacity.
However, its 17 mpg overall fuel economy leaves something to be desired. The 2022 Ram 1500 also received mediocre scores for braking and emergency handling.
Here’s the lowest-scoring full-size pickup truck in CR’s rankings
If the 2022 Toyota Tundra and Ram 1500 come in at the top of Consumer Reports’ rankings of full-size pickup trucks, which model sits at the bottom? That would be the Ram 1500 Classic, the previous generation of the Ram 1500.
The biggest red flag is the Classic’s reliability. Consumer Reports ranks the truck at the bottom compared to the competition. Other low points include the climb necessary to get into the cab, poor fuel economy, and awkward maneuvering in tight spaces.
But the Classic gets high marks in some areas. Consumer Reports notes its “excellent powertrains” and praises it as having the most comfortable ride among full-size trucks. CR also notes the quiet ride and roomy cabin.
Overall, buyers seem unlikely to go wrong with the 2022 Toyota Tundra or Ram 1500 if they’re looking for a solid, full-size pickup.
