The Honda Civic Type R is not the usual boring Civic that most people are familiar with but rather a high-powered sports car that gearheads dream about. That being said, the last Civic Type R came out for the 2021 model year, and that’s because Honda has been working on a brand-new Civic Type R that’s fit for a new generation of the Civic. Here’s a look at the next-gen 2023 Honda Civic Type R, including a version that might cost close to $200,000.

Even though the 2021 Honda Civic Type R was the last Type R for a while, it was still a really good car. At a price tag that started at about $39,000, the 2021 model year was a relatively affordable sports car that was fast and fun to drive. It was equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine with 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
This engine allows the model to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, and it could also top out at about 169 mph. Those specs made it pretty fast, but where this unique Civic shines is on the corners, as it handled pretty well. Another fun feature that many gearheads loved about the Type R was that Honda only offered it with a manual transmission.
A look at the 2023 Honda Civic Type R TCR
Not much is known about the next-gen version of the Type R, but it is known that it’ll be using the same 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 but tuned to get more power. On top of that, Honda says that it will be producing a ready-to-race version of the car called the TCR. This race-ready version of the Type R will only be available to Honda Racing Line members, and it’ll cost a lot of money.
Honda expects to sell the Civic Type R TCR for just over $170,000. The Civic Type R TCR will still use the same 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that other Type Rs are using, but it’ll be calibrated by a motorsport company instead. Thanks to the upgrades that Honda made under the hood, the TCR version should be able to generate significantly more power than usual. Instead of producing 306 horsepower, the TCR should make over 340 horsepower.
Honda also made several upgrades to the Civic Type R TCR, including changes to its suspension, electronics, and structure. These upgrades should make this Type R a very capable car on the track.
What else Honda is cooking up for the future
In addition to the 2023 TCR race car, Honda Performance Development is also building other vehicles based on the compact sedan that should be ready for the track. Like the TCR, these versions are exclusively available to Honda Racing Line members. The Honda Civic Si TCA is based on the Civic Si, and it’ll cost about $52,000. Unlike the Type Rs, the Civic Si TCA has a 1.5-liter I4 engine that gets about 200 horsepower.
Despite having a smaller and weaker engine, the TCA was built for the track, and as such, it’ll have upgrades like Eibach race springs and HPD Wilwood Superlite front brakes, according to Honda. Another race car that Honda is making is the Type R TC. This car starts at about $90,000, and it’s equipped with the same 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that other Type Rs are equipped with.
Unlike the Honda Civic Type R TCR, the TC’s engine makes the same horsepower as the regular Type R does. However, it’ll still have some performance-oriented upgrades, such as HPD cooling ducts and a high-flow front grille.
