Polestar might be a relatively new name to the automotive register, but it has already been flexing its muscles in the world of electric motoring. The Polestar 1 was a real show of force, highlighting that the team behind it know how to make a high-performance luxury GT. Next came the Polestar 2, a more mainstream model for the masses that has just gone into production in China. However, the Polestar Precept concept car previews a war with Tesla.
The sleek electric saloon is a beautiful piece of design that features a flowing silhouette narrated by chiseled details. It is a departure from the current Polestar models as its exterior design shares no correlation with Volvo – Polestar and Volvo share the same parent company. Camera-based door mirrors reduce drag as well as maintain the clean look of the Precept. While this car is just a concept for now, it will influence the design of future Polestar models.
The pillarless doors swing open to reveal an open space thanks in part to rear-hinged rear doors. A zen-like minimalism gives the four-seat cabin a rather tranquil aesthetic. This car is longer than a Model S by 15cm, but it uses this increase to boost rear passenger space. Its airy feel is amplified by a full length glass roof. A 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system is powered by Android, and is also supported by a 12.5-inch instrument display.
Its interior also hosts flax-based natural composites to replace plastics. In fact, the concept car uses 80% less plastic than conventional vehicles. The vegan cabin aims to use high levels of recycled materials with 3D knitted fabrics made from bottles, and carpets fashioned from reclaimed fishing nets.
Being a concept car at this stage means that there’s no details on range or charging times, but considering how quickly Polestar has created its first two products, we’d imagine this luxury saloon to appear for real in the near future.
