Despite the fact that Sports Utility Vehicles or SUVs have gained a lot of popularity in the Indian market, Multi-Purpose Vehicles or MPVs continue to have a strong foothold. About 10 per cent of total vehicle sales in India still come from MPVs, and in the fourth quarter of the Financial Year 2021-22, the segment grew by 16 per cent year-on-year. Between January and March 2022, total MPV sales stood at 77,244 units compared to 66,865 vehicles sold during the same period in FY2021. And the top three best-selling MPVs in India were the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Innova Crysta, and the newly launched Kia Carens.

Now, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga continued the lead the segment with a market share of 41 per cent. In the quarter that ended on March 31, 2022, the carmaker sold 31,384 units of the MPV, witnessing a growth of 10 per cent, compared to 28,642 units sold between January and March 2021. As for the Toyota Innova Crysta, despite being the second best-selling MPV in the Indian market with a market share of 19 per cent, YoY sales were down by 7 per cent in Q4 FY2022. Between January and March 2022, the company sold 14,668 units of the Innova Crysta, compared to 15,700 units sold during the same quarter in FY2021.

Kia manages to sell 12,692 units of the new MPV between January and March 2022, bagging the third spot with a market share of 16 per cent
However, what really breathed life into the MPV space was the Kia Carens. Despite being an all-new model, Kia manages to sell 12,692 units of the new MPV between January and March 2022, bagging the third spot with a market share of 16 per cent. Kia’s Carnival too managed to achieve 25 per cent growth in Q4 FY2022, at 968 units, bagging the sixth spot. Between January and March 2021, Kia had sold 773 units of the Carnival. The MPV currently hold a 1 per cent market share in the MPV segment.
Despite being in the fourth spot with an 11 per cent market share, even the Renault Triber witnessed a 26 per cent fall in quarterly sales, at 8,680 units. In Q4 FY2021, Renault India has sold 11,768 units of the Triber MPV. Between January and March 2022, Maruti Suzuki India sold 8,389 units of the XL6, witnessing a decline of 9 per cent compared to 9,201 units sold during the same period in FY2021. This too currently holds an 11 per cent market share in the MPV space.
Mahindra sold 426 units of the Marazzo, seeing a decline of 23 per cent, compared to 550 units sold in Q4 FY2021
In the last quarter, the Mahindra sold 426 units of the Marazzo, seeing a decline of 23 per cent, compared to 550 units sold in Q4 FY2021, holding a market share of 1 per cent. At the same time, the Toyota Vellfire accounted for 37 units in Q4 FY2022, a massive drop of 63 per cent in volume, compared to the 99 units sold during the same quartet in 2021. The premium MPV has nearly 0 per cent market share in the MPV space. Also, during this last quarter, Nissan pulled the plug on its subsidiary brand Datsun India, effectively discontinuing the GO+ MPV. The company had sold zero units of the MPV in Q4 FY2022.
