However, it was only in 1949 that the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) introduced the road racing World Championship, now known as MotoGP.

Renowned riders such as Geoff Duke, Giacomo Agostini, Barry Sheene, and Kenny Roberts, along with others, were making a name for themselves, globally, eventually going down in history as the pioneers of motorcycle racing.
As time progressed, multiple changes were introduced in the road racing championship with the riders seeing new safety measures and the bikes getting new engine configurations. In the 1990s, the sport’s popularity was sky-high, and riders such as Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, Mick Doohan, and Valentino Rossi came into the picture.
After the millennium, in 2002, the road racing World Championship got the name MotoGP. The beginning of MotoGP saw prototype bikes running on 990cc, 4-stroke engines. With this change, the racing fraternity saw a different level of competitiveness and technology, with manufacturers like Honda, Yamaha, and Ducati going head-to-head for the best one to come out on top.
This was when the world saw the emergence of one of, if not, the greatest motorcycle rider to ever walk this planet, Valentino Rossi. Rossi won the first MotoGP race in Suzuka, competing on a wet track. He started MotoGP racing for Honda, using the RC211V 4-stroke bike.
With its fast-paced competition and thrilling finale, MotoGP has maintained its ability to fascinate fans in recent years. The sport has become more exciting thanks to the emergence of young riders like Marc Márquez, Maverick Vinales, and Fabio Quartararo, while old-timers like Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have parted ways with their unforgettable careers.
The MotoGP schedule features competitions conducted in numerous nations across the world, from modern locations in Asia and the Americas to well-known European tracks like Assen and Mugello. The championship keeps pushing the limits of performance and safety because of ongoing technological and regulatory advancements.
