With today being World Environment Day, let’s take a look at how MotoGP is getting more eco-friendly and reducing emissions, while still keeping the excitement levels high.

Jorge Viegas, president of the FIM, stated that he wanted to set an example for the motorcycle industry by demonstrating that racing can be fun while using sustainable fuels.

MotoGP declared its goal to begin using 100% sustainable fuel for its motorcycles by 2027 in order to stay on course with this. Since then, MotoGP has implemented a number of programmes to reduce its carbon footprint and increase public awareness of climate change.

Finding and developing motorcycle fuels that are more environmentally friendly has taken a lot of work. MotoGP has also made efforts to “green up” the competitions that have been contested.

In an effort to reduce the amount of waste generated on racing weekends, 1,500 unnecessary tyres were held from being manufactured. This decrease in manufacturing and transit lowers the carbon emissions of the logistics sector.

Sustainability has also been a top goal for MotoGP raceways, some of which are shared with Formula 1. Venues like Silverstone and Catalunya have implemented regulations, such as using only renewable energy during events and constructing electric charging stations to promote the use of electric vehicles.

The sport is working on creating and testing “sustainable non-fossil drop-in fuels” made from waste products and renewable energy sources. By 2024, it is predicted that 40% of MotoGP fuel will be non-fossil, with 100% non-fossil fuel being the target by 2027.

MotoGP has promised to collaborate with manufacturers to make this sustainable fuel compatible with traditional internal combustion engines. These programmes highlight MotoGP’s commitment to innovation and its honest participation in the global movement towards a more environmentally responsible future.

The efforts made to progress towards a greener future did not stop there, though. In terms of the racing on the track, the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, the first all electric motorcycle championship, was introduced in 2019. Energica, a business devoted solely to the electric motorbike market, was initially the only company to produce engines in this class.

However, in 2023, Ducati joined this initiative by taking on the position of official supplier. Preparations started after Ducati Test Rider Michele Pirro was captured lapping the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on their new electric vehicle. The Italian factory will be the first major brand in the motorcycle industry to participate in the all-electric World Cup.

Thoughts On MotoGP Getting More Environmentally Friendly

It is a great thing seeing Motorsports still thriving even though emission norms and carbon-neutral rules are being put in place. Working around the rules lets the racers still get the most out of their bikes and lets us fans enjoy it.

Not only that, it also reduces the impact it had on the environmental and ecological factor, making it healthier for Mother Earth. With the MotoE category coming into place, Dorna Sports have taken an even bigger step in being sustainable.
