London’s largest taxi and rental car company, Addison Lee, is buying Green Tomato Cars, a London-based ride service provider specialising in electrified cars. Addison Lee will thus take over the fleet consisting of more than 1,000 electric vehicles.
Addison Lee’s fleet will grow to more than 7,500 vehicles following the takeover of Green Tomato. The deal is expected to boost Addison Lee’s commitment to sustainable mobility: In September 2021, the company had announced that it would use only purely electric cars from 2023. However, it is not clear how many of the 7,500 vehicles are currently emission-free.
Green Tomato Cars is a London based ride service provider that has been focused on the use of electrified vehicles for several years. Liam Griffin, CEO of Addison Lee, stressed that he pleased to “unite these great London companies with shared values focused on quality, reliability, and sustainability. The London private hire market is thriving, and this acquisition supports our growth and ability to meet every Londoner’s transport needs.”
Griffin also added: “With London businesses now wanting their employees back in the office more frequently, demand for corporate travel is increasing. And as London’s economy continues to bounce back, Addison Lee is in a stronger position than ever to offer safe, quality, and sustainable transport services.”
Just two years ago, Addison Lee announced it would only use all-electric cars from 2023, investing £160 million to do so. It wanted to add 200 VW ID.4s to its fleet per month from November 2021. At the time, the service provider had around 650 EVs in service among just over 4,000 vehicles. Addison Lee also acquired ComCab in 2021 to enable customers to use different services through a unified service platform.
