Lexus has just announced the new RZ 450 – the brand’s first entry into the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market.
The RZ is the first of several electric cars expected to be produced by the Japanese luxury car-maker, which is currently aiming for a full line-up of EVs in every car category by 2030.
This is what we know so far.
Performance
The 71kWh battery of the new Lexus is mounted under the floor, giving the car a low centre of gravity.
The battery feeds two electric motors that offer 150kW over the front axle and 80kW over the rear, using Lexus’ “Direct4” all-wheel-drive system.
The car has also been shaped for airflow to provide downforce to the wheels, providing further stability.
Driving force is applied in a 60:40 ratio, and a “steer-by-wire” system has been developed for responsive steering.
Frequency Reactive Dampers – an advanced shock absorber – have also been included to soften the ride based on the frequency of inputs from the road surface and in order to maximize comfort.
The current estimated range for the RZ is 450km.
Styling and features
The RZ will have a “spindle body”, based on the design of the grilles on previous Lexus models, in order to prioritize aerodynamic efficiency.
Styling is described as “minimalist” with a spacious “omotenashi” interior – the Japanese word for hospitality.
This interior has a suede and wood-grain trim applied to it. Additionally, a panoramic roof, heated seats, a 14-inch touchscreen, and an illuminated interior with ambient lighting effects are included.
In-cabin sounds are also available to replicate the noise of conventional driving.
Advanced driver assistance features then include a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and emergency driving stop system.
Additionally, autonomous parking assistance is included with support for parallel parking, front parking, and backup parking and exit.
