Japanese luxury carmaker Lexus has revealed the new GX SUV. The 2023 Lexus GX is the third generation of the SUV and features a more brutal, boxy design compared to its predecessor.
The new Lexus GX is based on Toyota’s TNGA-F modular ladder frame platform that also underpins the LX SUV. Versions of the TNGA-F platform are also used by the Toyota Land Cruiser SUV with yet more iterations set to be used by next-gen Hilux and Fortuner that will come to India.
The new Lexus GX is primarily for the European and North American markets but will be coming to Japan and Australia (both RHD markets) shortly. Plans for the Lexus GX in India are not known but we do expect it to eventually make its way here.
Other than the obvious boxy redesign, the biggest change on the Lexus GX can be found under the bonnet. Gone is the V8 which has been replaced by a twin-turbo V6 engine.
The 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine of the new Lexus GX pushes out 344bhp and 648Nm of peak torque which is sent to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel-drive setup. A hybrid using a 2.4-litre inline 4-cylinder petrol engine will also be offered.
The new Lexus GX is 4,950mm long, 1,980mm wide, 1,865mm tall and has a 2,850mm long wheelbase. The Lexus GX is offered with 18, 20 and 22-inch wheel options with the smallest ones fitted with 33-inch tyres.
So let’s come back to the visual changes made to the GX by Lexus. Gone is the dreary-looking SUV with an oversized gaping spindle at the front and what we’ve got instead is a proper brute of an SUV.
At the front, the sharp headlights meld well with the spindle grille design. The boxy look is further enhanced by the upright windshield and the straighter body panels. The flared wheelarches add a bit of width to the GX SUV while the rear windows feature an upward kink that raises the window line.
At the rear, the changes are even more prominent with the upright windshield and tailgate. The taillights include a lightbar-style LED brake light above which you find the Lexus name spelt out.
The interiors are draped in leather and the dash plays host to two large displays for the infotainment and driving data. The driver’s display is a 12.3-inch unit while the infotainment unit is a 14-inch touchscreen. The heads-up display is optional and the new GX can be had in 6 and 7-seater configurations.
Among the six variants of the Lexus GX that will go on sale later this year are two off-road-focused versions dubbed Overtrail and Overtrail+. These are the ones fitted with the 33-inch all-terrain tyres along with off-road driving modes and Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) mechanical off-road suspension setup.
Thoughts About The New Lexus GX
The Lexus GX has gone from being a regular city SUV into a brutal one that doesn’t mind exploring the great outdoors and it is all the better for it.
