The coronavirus lockdown may have you feeling a little low, but Lamborghini is here to lift your spirits. The Italian supercar firm has released a teaser video of its new V12-engined track-only hyper machine – and it sounds suitably ridiculous.
Developed by the company’s motorsport arm, Lamborghini Squadra Corsa, the as-yet-unnamed hypercar is powered by a glorious 6.5-litre naturally-aspired V12 engine that pumps out 819bhp. We get a brief soundbite of the twelve-cylinder orchestra as the prototype blasts around an Italian racing circuit, and it reminds us of the old V12 Formula 1 cars of the early 1990s.
We also get a quick look at parts of the hypercar’s intricate bodywork. As to be expected from a Lamborghini track weapon, the car sports a gigantic diffuser, a smattering of small winglets embedded into the wheel arches and, of course, a suitably massive rear wing. There’s even an adjustable front splitter, which sits below a pair of LED headlights.
Lamborghini is positioning the car as a track toy for its affluent customers, but there could be more to it than meets the eye. The company is considering an entry into the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2021, coinciding with the introduction of new regulations that will allow hypercars to compete for outright victory.
Could we see the V12 hypercar at next year’s endurance race? Quite possibly, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out just what Lamborghini has up its sleeve.
