We get a glimpse of the brilliant N e-shift simulated dual-clutch transmission, too.
Hyundai has released a new teaser video previewing the artificial “engine” noise that will debut with the high-performance Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. When it comes to electric vehicles, faux exhaust notes are not anything new. But The Ioniq 5 N may take things up a notch if the latest clip is anything to go by.
As we have previously seen, Hyundai is working on the “N e-shift” system that is said to emulate the sensation of the dual-clutch transmission you'll find in an Elantra N, for example.
We now finally see how this works, with the video showing the shift paddles. The Ioniq 5 N mimics the sound of a gearshift and should create an exhilarating experience for keen drivers – even if it is simulated.

When the driver downshifts, you can hear the revs rising and bouncing off the limiter, as they would in an ICE car. As for the exhaust note, it's clear that Hyundai was trying to deliver the same raspy note its turbocharged four-pot N models are known for. While it's one of the better-sounding artificial noises we've heard, it still doesn't get close to the unmistakable sound of a combustion engine.
That's not to say it doesn't sound appealing. The futuristic “exhaust note” is great and adds some fun to the overall package. Coupled with the simulated gearbox, it should make for a riveting driving experience, and we're glad to see Hyundai trying to make EVs exciting. There's no denying that electric vehicles are fast, but many gearheads are still not interested because they're silent and “unexciting.”

The video also shows us the Ioniq 5 N's Drift Mode. The electric hatch approaches a bend, and the driver executes a superb and smokey slide with panache. It may be a crossover, but it's obvious Hyundai's electric performer loves to dance. With former BMW M boss Albert Biermann heading up development, we can expect a genuinely superb motorcar.
Biermann has previously said the Ioniq 5 N could wade into battle with as much as 600 horsepower. That's not a confirmed figure, though. “It's not finalized, it could be 580, 600, [or] 620 horsepower. It's a lot,” added Biermann. If so, the Hyundai will decimate the Tesla Model Y Performance. And with the simulated N e-shift system and artificial engine noise, driving should be more fun.
The regular Ioniq 5 is already a superb electric vehicle, so we expect nothing but the best from this performance-minded alternative.
