It may not be the first thing you think of when safety is involved, but an internal trunk latch is there as an emergency measure should a child or pet (or you, for some reason) get trapped inside. Just such a feature is at the heart of a new recall from Hyundai for more than 63,000 vehicles.
Involved in the recall are model-year 2020 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid sedans, as well as model-year 2019 G70 sedans from Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside and trapping someone within, increasing their risk of injury.
Dealers will inspect the trunk latch and replace the trunk latch base, as necessary, for free. Hyundai will begin notifying owners May 20, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 855-371-9460, or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
