There is a chance that one of the Sonata's engines has been discontinued.
Hyundai revealed a dramatically redesigned Sonata earlier this week, and now the Korean automaker has shared more details from Seoul about what we can expect from the mid-size sedan's powertrains, the expected release date, and available technologies.
It's not guaranteed that all the specs listed here will apply to the US-spec model, but Hyundai has confirmed that the updated sedan will come with a 2.0-liter hybrid engine, a 2.5-liter gas engine, and a 2.5-liter turbo for the N Line, specifically. All of these engines are available already, but interestingly, the 1.6-liter turbo that is available for the 2023 Sonata wasn't mentioned, so the mill could be dropped from the lineup. Hyundai hasn't confirmed if the engines' outputs have changed, either.
Unfortunately, Hyundai made no mention of all-wheel drive being added as an option, and we hoped it would bring this model into line with the Toyota Camry.
Hyundai also shared some of the exterior colors for the sedan, several of which aren't currently available for the US-spec 2023 model.
Aero Silver has a matte finish with a metallic pigment that varies between coolness and warmth based on natural light. There is also Abyss Black Pearl, Serenity White Pearl, Atlas White, Nocturne Gray (also with a matte finish), Transmission Blue Pearl, Biophilic Blue Pearl, Ultimate Red, Cream Beige, and Curated Silver.
Heading inside, the interior can be finished in Black, Dark Gray/Greige Two-Tone, Dark Gray/Camel Two-Tone, Dark Gray/Navy Two-Tone, plus Dark Gray with red stitching for the N Line.
We already know that the new Hyundai Sonata will have dual 12.3-inch displays. Still, Hyundai has also confirmed a 12-inch head-up display will be available, as will an improved 12-speaker Bose Premium sound system with new CenterPoint 360 technology. Despite the new screens, the new Sonata still smartly uses a few physical controls. To make loading cargo easier, there is a power trunk lid that Hyundai claims is the first in its class.
Safety gear now includes a new Remote Smart Parking Assist that allows customers to park the vehicle using a smart key while standing outside the vehicle. Hyundai also says the car has better stability, strengthened side collision protection, class-leading braking performance, and reduced noise, vibration, and harshness levels.
The new Sonata will arrive in global markets in the second half of this year, but pricing has yet to be made available. Either way, this car will present a much sterner challenge for the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord than before.
