Back in 2018, Hyundai recalled some 10,000 2017 and 2018 Ioniqs due to a possible increased electrical resistance caused by a loose connection between the main relay and power relay assembly located under the rear seat. The company switched suppliers and repaired the recalled Ioniqs.
However, Hyundai is recalling those same vehicles — the 2017 and 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid models — again due to the exact same issue. It appears the initial defective part was replaced with yet another defective part, meaning all 10,575 units that were previously recalled are being recalled for a second time.
Though Hyundai has not reported any injuries or accidents related to this issue, the loose connection can cause heat buildup that can lead to a warning light coming, or potentially a fire.
In Canada, 754 vehicles were affected in the 2018 recall, but Transport Canada doesn’t have any updated information on this second recall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai will begin notifying owners in late August. Dealers will inspect and replace necessary parts, free of charge. Note that vehicles already repaired in the previous recall should still be inspected to have the new fix completed.
Using your VIN, you can check online at Transport Canada to find out if your car is covered by a recall campaign.
