The World Car Finals powered by Brembo and the journey to the World Car 2022 test-drive trip recently concluded with the announcement of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 as the 2022 World Car of the Year live at the New York International Auto Show.
The all-electric hatchback from the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai also bagged the title in two more segments as the model won the 2022 World Electric Vehicle of the Year and the 2022 World Car Design of the Year award honours. The finalists were chosen by secret ballot by a jury of 102 eminent worldwide automotive journalists from 33 countries based on their appraisal of each qualifying car as part of their professional job and the ballots were tallied by KPMG.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was picked from a pool of twenty-eight (28) automobiles from across the world, followed by a shortlist of three finalists released on March 15th. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Kia EV6 were the 2022 top three finalists in the world car of the year segment.
According to World Car Awards, the vehicles eligible for World Car of the Year 2022 must be produced in quantities of at least 10,000 units per year, must be priced below the luxury car level in their primary markets, and must be “on-sale” in at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, and the United States). The vehicles should also be on at least two different continents between January 1, 2021, and March 30, 2022.
Earlier this month, Hyundai announced that it will be launching the Ioniq 5 in late October this year. According to reports, Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be priced somewhere between the Rs 35-40 lakh price bracket. Globally, Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 in two configurations. There is a rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive has a single motor setup and it generates 169 bhp of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive version gets a dual-motor setup. It has an electric motor on both axles and produces 306 bhp of max power and 605 Nm of peak torque in total.
