The South Korean car manufacturer, Hyundai is gearing up to unveil the long-awaited Ioniq 5 electric vehicle tomorrow in India.
That being said, the bookings for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicle is said to commence on the same day and we expect the model to be launched in January 2023.
Speaking about the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the upcoming electric crossover uses the South Korean car manufacturer’s advanced Electric-Global Modular Platform (e-GMP). This means the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover is almost identical to the recently launched Kia EV6 electric crossover vehicle, which apparently was well received in India.
However, unlike the fully-imported Kia EV6 electric crossover that was previously sold in India, the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover is a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit. The benefit of CKD is that it allows the South Korean automaker to overcome the high taxes on fully imported vehicles.

This means we can expect the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover to have a significant price advantage over the Kia EV6 electric crossover in India. Speaking about the price advantage, Hyundai is yet to confirm the specifications of the Ioniq 5 electric crossover that will soon hit the Indian roads.
In terms of powertrain options, Hyundai is currently offering the Ioniq 5 electric crossover with two different battery pack options in the international markets. This includes a 58kWh battery pack and a slightly larger 72.6kWh battery pack. In addition to these variations, Hyundai is also offering both 2WD and AWD iterations of the Ioniq 5.
Diving into details, the 2WD variant of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover is powered by a single electric motor that is capable of producing 215bhp of power and 350Nm of peak torque. On top of that, this variant equipped with the larger 72.6kWh battery pack is capable of covering 481km on a full charge.
On the other hand, the AWD variant of the electric crossover comes equipped with two electric motors powering each axle and producing a combined power of 302bhp and 605Nm of torque. However, we expect this fully-kitted AWD variant with the larger battery pack to be assembled and sold in India with a price tag anywhere between Rs 38 lakh to Rs 45 lakh mark.
Thoughts About The Upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5
The launch of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover will further expand the South Korean automaker’s EV product portfolio in India and we are expecting to see an overwhelming response from the target audience. That being said, the premium EV segment steadily gaining traction in India and the launch of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover will give the South Korean automaker decent authority in the premium EV segment.
