The new Vehicle to Load (V2L) function on electric cars has got a lot of people excited. Various electrical appliances have been plugged into EVs and one car that has sparked this new trend is the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Taking things further, there is now an off-grid ‘Hyundai Hotel’ (or chalet) in the United Kingdom that can be entirely powered by the all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5’s V2L function.
Before we get too excited, do note that the ‘Hyundai Hotel’ can only handle two guests at one time. Located in Essex, it is just an hour’s drive from central London, but is not connected to the power grid. Hence, the V2L function of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 makes sense here. The Hyundai Hotel was curated by broadcaster and critic Grace Dent, and consists of a guest suite, a restaurant (and bar), and a cinema.
The guest suite is a high-end luxury cabin by Colemans Farm and offers everything you can expect from a luxury boutique hotel. As for the restaurant (and bar), it sources its ingredients locally and guests can choose between indoor and outdoor dining. To complete the ‘staycation’ package, the cinema even has its own popcorn machine. All amenities at Hyundai Hotel are powered by the Hyundai Ioniq 5’s V2L technology.
Spawning the idea of the ‘Hyundai Hotel’ is research commissioned by Hyundai that found that nearly half (46%) of UK citizens say that sustainability and the environment are more important to them now compared to five years ago when choosing holiday accommodation. A further quarter (25%) are choosing staycations over traveling abroad to reduce their carbon footprint by flying less.
Two fifths (40%) say they are also looking for cheaper travel options this year and over half (55%) admit this decision is due to the current cost of living crisis. As a result, over half (53%) say they would like to invest their holiday spending in local UK economies rather than abroad.

The whole experience demonstrates the practicality of this pioneering technology, and we hope the concept inspires more people to go off-grid.”
