The winners of the World Car Of The Year 2022 were announced with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 taking home the titular award. EVs won a total of 5 of the 6 categories at the WCOTY awards that were announced at the 2022 New York Auto Show.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was the biggest winner at the 2022 World Car of the Year Awards. The Ioniq 5 EV won the titular World Car of the Year Award beating its Kia EV6 sibling and the Mustang Mach E.
The Korean Ioniq 5 crossover EV also won the award for the World Electric Vehicle of the Year – a new category at this year’s awards – beating the Audi e-tron GT and the Mercedes EQS to the prize.
The third and final category in which the Hyundai Ioniq 5 triumphed at the 2022 WCOTY awards was for the World Car Design of the Year.
Unlike the other categories at WCOTY 2022, a shortlist of cars was first chosen by a panel of design experts – Gernot Bracht, Ian Callum, Patrick le Quément, Tom Matano, Victor Nacif and Shiro Nakamura – before the winner was decided by the jury panel of 102 journalists from 33 countries around the world. The Ioniq 5 beat out the Mercedes EQS and the Kia EV6 to claim the World Car Design of the Year Award.
Speaking about the Hyundai Ioniq 5’s triple win at WCOTY 2022, Jaehoon Chang, President & CEO of Hyundai Motor Company said, “We are truly honored to receive these prestigious awards, which recognize the talent and hard work of all our people and business partners at Hyundai Motor Company. Our vision is to enable Progress for Humanity, and this endorsement of our approach will serve to embolden our commitment to make this vision a reality.”
Chang continued, “IONIQ 5 represents a pivotal achievement for us as we pioneer a new generation of smart mobility solutions with its innovative E-GMP platform technologies, exceptional performance and disruptive approach to design and space. Our game-changing EV has made a strong impact on increasingly ecoconscious and demanding consumers around the world, and its success supports the acceleration of electrification of the automotive industry. The pace of change at Hyundai will continue unabated through the rest of 2022 as we will soon be adding to our award-winning IONIQ range.”
The award for the World Performance Car of the Year was claimed by yet another EV – the Audi e-tron GT. The electric German e-tron GT performance sedan from Audi beat the likes of the BMW M3 and M4 and the Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ to claim the title at the 2022 WCOTY awards.
The title for the World Luxury Car of the Year was taken by another German EV – the Mercedes EQS. The three finalists selected for the award were the BMW iX electric SUV, the Genesis GV70 (an ICE SUV) and the EQS electric luxury sedan. The EQS luxury sedan from Stuttgart-based Mercedes was declared the winner after the votes from all 102 jurors were tallied.
The only category where an EV didn’t end up victorious was the World Urban Car of the Year. This was mostly because none of the three finalists – the Opel Mokka, Toyota Yaris Cross and the made-in-India VW Taigun – were purely electric. After the ballots were counted, the Toyota Yaris Cross was declared the winner of the World Urban Car award.
Thoughts On WCOTY 2022
The World Car of the Year Awards 2022 were dominated this year by electric cars. EVs won 5 (one of which was reserved for electric vehicles) of the 6 awards on offer with Hyundai Ioniq 5 taking home 3 trophies including the titular World Car of the Year Award. This year’s WCOTY awards are a sign of things to come as the world slowly but surely switches over to EVs.
