The flagship model for Hyundai worldwide is undoubtedly the new EV – the Hyundai IONIQ 5. carandbike was the first to confirm that the electric crossover will come to India. Part of Hyundai’s massive 6-model, ₹ 4000 crore EV strategy for India, the IONIQ 5 will be the first off the E-GMP cars. That is the name of the dedicated EV platform developed by the Hyundai Motor Group and has already birthed the IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 (also announced for India), and Genesis GV60.
Hyundai IONIQ 5’s contemporary design also won it the 2022 World Car Design of the Year award.
More models will come on this skateboard platform, including a smaller volumes model for India. The IONIQ 5 will be assembled in India at Hyundai Motor’s plant outside Chennai. The rollout for this EV is expected in late September – keeping the car on track for the October debut that we had exclusively reported. Pricing is expected around ₹ 35-40 lakhs ex-showroom.

The IONIQ 5 recently won 2022 World Car of the Year at a ceremony in New York City earlier this month. It also snapped up the 2022 World Car Design of the Year, and the new category of 2022 World Electric Vehicle of the Year. The IONIQ 5 has retro-futiristic looks, a clean and roomy cabin replete with sustainable materials, and is loaded ith connectivity and tech interfaces. The IONIQ 5 has two variants. One uses a 58 kWh battery – and spawns rear wheel drive variants. That is the car we expect in India. Also expexted subsequently is the longer range 72.6 kWh battery model with AWD options.

The MD at Hyundai Motor India, Unsoo Kim said, “Hyundai Motor India has already committed to the expansion of our BEV line-up to 6 models by 2028 and today, with great pride we are announcing the introduction of IONIQ 5 in CY 2022 in India”. “IONIQ 5 is set to redefine the aspirations of customers with solutions that exceeded in every sphere, elevating their mobility experiences beyond the conventional”, he added. Hyundai Motor India had announced a few months ago that it will bring six EV models to India by 2028. This will include the IONIQ 5, a new updated Kona EV, and the aforementioned compact EV being developed for India and the emerging markets – that will also likely have a Kia counterpart.
