Hyundai is poised to take the wraps off the Ioniq 5, a production-ready version of the 45 Concept, and the first car from the new Ioniq sub-brand.
But Hyundai Austria mistakenly pulled back the covers a little too early, revealing crucial details about the new EV’s technical specs.
So while we still don’t know exactly how the 5 will look – it’s not expected to differ dramatically from 2019’s 45 concept – we do know what’s under the skin.
According to information on Hyundai Austria’s website the initial First Edition version will come with a 58kWh battery pack and an electric motor at either end for four-wheel drive capability.
A combined total of 308bhp gets the 5 to 62mph in 5.2sec, and that 58kWh battery is good for a 280-mile WLTP driving range.
But most interestingly for anyone who lives, works or drives near one of the new high-power 350kW charging stations, the 5’s 800-volt fast charging capability means it can charge from 20% to 80% in just 15 minutes. The leaked spec also reveals the 5 will come with a solar roof to help the battery retain charge.
The leaked info comes from a reservation page set up by Hyundai Austria allowing customers to put down a €1000 deposit for one of the first cars. Austria is earmarked for 150 examples of the First Edition model, which the website claimed would be delivered in June or July.
The Ioniq 5 rides on Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform, which has been developed specifically for electric cars. According to the leaked specs, it’s 4640mm long and has an unusually long 3000m wheelbase.
If those numbers are right that means it’s shorter than a Sante Fe SUV but much longer between the axles, which should make it extremely roomy inside.
