The unmistakable, sharp-edged, and futuristic Hyundai Ioniq 5 had a helluva day at the 2022 New York Auto Show mid-April. On the show’s opening media day, the World Car Awards were doled out, and as you read in the headline, three huge wins were nabbed by the new EV.
In a sign of a changing (charging?) world, this is the first time all three finalists for World Car of the Year were EVs, with the Kia EV6 and Ford Mustang Mach-E in the running for the title, too.
Over in the the World Electric Car category, the Ioniq 5 triumphed over a pair of luxury EVs in the form of the Audi E-Tron GT and Mercedes-Benz EQS, which is mighty impressive for a mainstream manufacturer.
Rounding out the trio of awards the angular hatch drove home with was the World Car Design award, which I can support.
The Ioniq 5’s thoroughly different from anything on today’s roads. It’s got more bends and folds than a piece of origami, the taillights look like a retro Tetris game and, well, I just kinda like it. If there were a Jay Kana Best Design award, it’d handily win, too.
Congrats to you, Ioniq 5, in all your boxy glory. If you’re curious, the hatchback’s cargo space with the rear seats up is 770 L, which is plenty of room to drive home to its mothership garage with its awards in the back. The World Car of the Year Awards site has a full list of 2022’s winners, if you’d like some extra reading material.
