Hyundai Motors recently launched the Exter SUV in India and the newly launched micro-SUV has already bagged more than 11,000 bookings in the country. This means the Hyundai Exter will be another successful product for the South Korean automaker in India.
Since Hyundai is the parent company of Kia Motors, the success of the newly launched Exter SUV could push Kia to develop and launch their own version of the micro-SUV based on the Hyundai Exter.
That being said, the Hyundai Exter itself is heavily based on the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios platform. In fact, the Hyundai Exter SUV uses an almost similar-looking dashboard to the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios hatchback.
For Hyundai, this is good news as the development of the model is already based on the existing K1 platform (Grand i10 Nios) and this reduces complications in production and toolings. However, Kia Motors currently has no model that uses the K1 platform.
So, even if Kia could develop the Hyundai Exter-based micro-SUV, Kia Motors should still invest heavily to equip its production facility to produce cars based on a completely new platform (K1 platform). This will further push the overall development and production cost as well.
As such, the profit margins on the Exter-based Kia SUV will be much less compared to the Hyundai Exter SUV. As such, it is highly unlikely that Kia Motors will proceed to build an Exter-based SUV under the current market size.
However, there is a possibility to see an Exter-based Kia SUV if the micro-SUV market grows in the future. Until that, we do not see any possibility of an Exter-based Kia SUV coming to the Indian market.
Thoughts About The Hyundai Exter-Based Kia SUV
The Exter-based Kia SUV will not be feasible for Kia Motors under the current market size. However, there is a thin possibility for such an SUV and it will help the South Korean automaker further boost its sales figures in the country.
