Hyundai Motor Company has outlined plans to launch 17 new electric vehicles by 2030 across its Hyundai and Genesis brands – including a zero-emissions ute or van for the Hyundai brand.
Hyundai will invest 19.4 trillion Korean won ($AU22 billion) into electrification by the end of this decade – which will spawn 11 new battery-electric vehicles (EVs, or BEVs) for the Hyundai marque, and six for the Genesis luxury brand.
The 11 new Hyundai EVs will be spread across three sedans, six SUVs, one “new type model” and one light commercial vehicle (ute or van). This is believed to include this year’s Ioniq 6 sedan and the 2024 Ioniq 7 large SUV – but not the Ioniq 5 mid-size SUV that’s already on sale.
While that light commercial vehicle could be a new dual-cab ute or van, it could also refer to a vehicle such as the Korean-market Porter light truck (bottom of story), which offers an electric option.
Meanwhile, the Genesis electric vehicle range by 2030 will comprise two passenger cars (sedans or wagons) and four SUVs. While this count includes the new Electrified GV70 medium SUV due this year, it’s not clear if it includes the equally-new GV60 SUV or Electrified G80 sedan.
Hyundai and Genesis plan to sell a combined 1.87 million electric cars each year by 2030 – extending the 560,000-vehicle annual target previously set for 2025. The company plans for these models to account for seven per cent of global EV sales.
For reference, sister brand Kia has confirmed plans to launch 11 new electric vehicles by 2026 – seven on dedicated platforms, and four derived from petrol-powered cars – with an annual sales target of 880,000 by 2030.
Key to Hyundai’s electric car sales aspirations will be a new dedicated battery-electric platform set for launch in 2025, known as the Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA).
Derived from the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) underpinning the Ioniq 5, 6 and 7, the IMA chassis will battery packs and the way they mount to the chassis standardised, as well as the use of five standardised electric motors, improving energy efficiency and lowering costs.
The IMA will become Hyundai’s “passenger BEV [battery-electric vehicle] platform” – underpinning models of all shapes and sizes – along with the basis of new “purpose-built vehicles” for ride-sharing, delivery services and other specialty purposes.
Other highlights of Hyundai’s plan include expanding over-the-air updates to all models by 2025, introducing Level 3 semi-autonomous driving functionality later this year, and investing significant funds into vehicle software and connectivity.
Hyundai also plans to expand production of electric cars beyond its current locations in the Czech Republic (Kona Electric for Europe) and South Korea (Ioniq EV, Kona EV and Ioniq 5) – as well as secure additional battery supply to enable its electric car sales targets.
The Korean car maker hasn’t outlined when it will introduce solid-state battery technology, unlike many other car makers – though it says it is “cooperating with various global partners to improve energy density and cost efficiency.”
