Toyota sold 10,543 new vehicles in South Africa in August 2021, with 3,335 of these being a Hilux bakkie.
Out of these sales, 1,732 units were Hilux double cabs, 1,058 units were single cabs, and 545 units were extra cabs.
Despite the challenging year for new vehicle sales, Toyota has remained comfortably in first place and has sold a total of 75,323 new vehicles to date.
Best-selling Toyotas
According to Toyota, the company’s strong sales figures across various model ranges accounted for 25.4% of the overall new-vehicle market share for the month.
Notable models highlighted by the brand include:
- Hilux – 3,335 units
- Hiace – 1,298 units
- Starlet – 1,203 units
- Urban Cruiser – 876 units
- Fortuner – 856 units
- Corolla Quest – 806 units
“Laudable performances from [these models] saw Toyota surge to the top of the leaderboard for the eighth consecutive month of the year,” said the company.
Lexus, the luxury arm of Toyota, also performed well in the hybrid vehicle space in August, it said, with three hybrid-petrol models from the company seeing double-digit sales figures.
These are the Lexus ES, with 11 units sold, the RX, with 10 units sold, and the UX, with 11 units sold.
Hino, the commercial truck arm of Toyota, then sold a total of 251 units in August – with its 300-Series trucks accounting for 148 sales and 500-Series trucks for 68 sales.
Additionally, the company distributed over 1.33 million parts to domestic dealers during the month, with 278,000 pieces shipped to foreign markets.
The bigger picture
The National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) of South Africa commented on the significant uptick in vehicle sales in August, saying the numbers are pointing to a more resilient market.
According to the association, retail dealerships accounted for 83.6% of new vehicle sales in August.
“This was an outstanding performance as the economy is still recovering from the effects of the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in July, as well as the substantial disruptions at the ports as a result of the unrest, coupled to the cyberattack on Transnet operations,” said Mark Dommisse, chairperson of NADA.
Dommisse stated that manufacturers coped well with the loss of business and consumer confidence, as well as with supply challenges, to increase year-to-date sales by 32.4% when compared to 2020.
“The global shortage of semiconductors continues to play havoc with production and is causing many factories to be idled,” he added.
“Here in South Africa, we are still encountering delays caused by the unrest and the port disruptions, which is keeping customers waiting for their new vehicles.”
