A Toyota Corolla Hybrid Xs will take you an impressive 778km on R500 of petrol.
This is according to a calculation performed by TopAuto, using Toyota’s stated combined fuel consumption figure for the Corolla Hybrid Xs – which is 3.5 litres per 100km.
To work out how far you can drive on “R500”, we used the formula below:
- R18.34 per litre of 95 Unleaded Petrol (inland pricing).
- R500 will give you 27.26 litres of petrol at this price.
- 27.26 litres of petrol at 3.5l/100km in consumption results in 778km.
If the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Xs had a full tank of petrol – which is 43 litres – the car would theoretically be able to travel 1,228km before needing to refuel.
It must be noted that the figures above are based on claimed fuel consumption rates, and real-world driving performance may differ.
Running hybrid
The Corolla Hybrid is able to achieve this efficient use of fuel thanks to its petrol-hybrid system.
It comprises a 1.8-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, which produces a combined system output of 90kW and over 163Nm.
While the petrol tank powers the 1.8-litre motor, the electric motor is linked to a battery installed in the car.
Practical ways this system helps save fuel include the petrol engine turning off when the car is idle or slowing down, and the electric motor taking over.
The electric motor also provides drive at low acceleration, with the car’s battery charged through regenerative braking.
This hybrid power is then distributed to the Corolla’s front wheels by a CVT system.
“A petrol-electric Toyota Hybrid system fuses an internal combustion engine’s high-speed power with the clean efficiency and low-speed torque of an electric motor that never needs to be plugged in,” said Toyota.
