PETALING JAYA: Honda Malaysia has confirmed that an accident which led to the death of a woman driver involved a ruptured driver’s airbag inflator made by Takata.
“No official cause of death has yet been determined,” said Honda in a statement. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the driver during this difficult time.”
Honda issued the confirmation following an inspection of the 2005 Honda City with local police.
The company said the accident vehicle was one of the units recalled on May 21 last year but the owner did not send the car in for inspection despite three mailed recall notices.
Honda said it was working with representative of the driver’s family to resolve their remaining concerns
Earlier, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din said Norazlin Haron, 44, was driving from Sri Gombak to Kota Damansara together with her two sons, aged nine and 12, and 22-year-old niece on Sunday noon when her Honda City bumped into the right side of a Mercedes at a junction in Kota Damansara.
The driver’s airbag inflator was found to be ruptured and Norazlin suffered injuries to her chest. She died at the scene.
Earlier this month, Honda Malaysia issued a recall for 147,894 vehicles manufactured from 2003 to 2011 to replace the front passenger airbag inflator. The car in which Norazlin died in was recalled for checks on both the driver and passenger-side airbags.
Honda Malaysia reminded owners of Honda vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator product recall to get their vehicles repaired at authorised dealers as soon as possible. Vehicle owners can check their vehicles’ product recall status at
