Extra 500 units doubles the Aussie allocation for 2023 Honda Civic Type R hot hatch
Honda has released the pressure valve building up with Australian orders of the new-generation 2023 Honda Civic Type R, announcing today it has secured an extra 500 units of the hot hatch that it promises will reduce current waiting times.
Honda Australia had initially only secured 500 units for our market for 2023, which was clearly inadequate and led to waiting times of almost two years for local customers keen to get into the new Civic Type R.
The company has refused to divulge how many orders it has taken for the Type R, saying only that the order bank was “overwhelming”.
This suggests that some customers might still be facing a long wait if there are more than 1000 orders in the system and they’re not among those.
What’s more, the fresh batch of 500 cars are not due to land in Australia until early next year.
In a statement released today, Honda Australia said customers will be contacted by one of its retail centres with an updated estimated delivery date.
“Honda Australia has been continuously monitoring the situation around extended wait times and have sought opportunities to minimise the impact to Civic Type R customers,” the company said.
“An additional 500 units of Civic Type R have been allocated to the Australian market which will be made available for customers in 2023.
“Estimated arrival times have been reduced by up to nine months, with the latest orders now scheduled for February 2024 arrival at Honda Centres.”
Honda Australia director Carolyn McMahon added: “Our loyal customers will [now] benefit from the arrival of their vehicle within a reasonable timeframe.”
Priced from $72,600 drive-away, the sixth-generation Civic Type R is the fastest and most powerful example of Honda’s hot hatch in its 25-year history, bringing major improvements across the board compared to the previous model that was priced much lower at $54,990 plus on-road costs at the end of its lifecycle.
That hasn’t deterred keen Aussie buyers of the piping-hot new Civic, which produces 235kW/420Nm from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and has received rave reviews – including from carsales’ Feann Torr.
